Kompany happy at City

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany insists he has no plans to quit the club this summer.

The inspirational Belgian defender has been linked with Spanish giants Barcelona, but Kompany is a firm fans' favourite and has five years left on his current deal.

And he has reaffirmed his commitment to the City cause as they will look to recapture the Premier League crown next season.

The 27-year-old told RMC:

"I have no reason to go elsewhere.

"I am happy here, I have five years left and if you knew the plans for this team for the future. I consider that to be a real objective.

"We will win the Champions League one day. It is inevitable. The same question arose concerning the Premier League and we did it.

"With the investment being made in all areas of the club, that will surely come. When we see people like [Patrick] Vieira it's one of the things that can help us move forward. In Europe, we will be more competitive.

"Our season will also depend on the cup final. If we win, it'll be fine.

"It will not be easy. The Wembley pitch is huge and Wigan are a team who play good football with their Spanish coach. They play in an unusual system compared to the other teams of the Premier League.

"There is a risk but we were fully awake during the game we played against them recently. We will not be surprised."

He also ruled out any future move to Paris Saint Germain.

"Could I go to Paris Saint-Germain? No, I am a supporter of Marseille."

Kompany talks up derby day

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany feels next Monday's derby against Manchester United has lost none of its importance.

The Old Trafford showdown is not the title-decider that many may have anticipated earlier in the campaign with City all but out of the reckoning for the Barclays Premier League crown. The fading champions trail United by 15 points and boss Roberto Mancini has conceded defeat. Yet Kompany insists City want to land at least one blow on their rivals.

The influential defender said: "A derby is a derby. I don't think we could care less about the league in that game. It is about who is going to be champions of Manchester - that is all it is."

The stakes were higher when the sides met at the Etihad Stadium last April with three games of the season remaining. City went into the game trailing United by three points and faced the prospect that defeat would probably eliminate them from the race.

But Kompany's winner took them top of the table on goal difference and City, who had trailed by eight points just weeks earlier, held onto their advantage - just - to seize the title.

Kompany, who admits he has hardly enjoyed a goal so much, said: "Last year had so much more to it. It was a derby and a big comeback from all of us. It is a completely different situation, today and last year.

"You don't get too many moments like that in your career, but you move on and hopefully I will score many more in the future. I have never been someone who has milked the result we had last year. Those things don't happen often.

"For me it is a one-off game and everything that has happened in the past has no importance whatsoever next Monday. It is about coming out on top in that game. I am looking forward to it and I think everyone else at Manchester City is too."

City were at their rampant best last time they visited Old Trafford in October 2011, running out remarkable 6-1 winners. The winning post may be in sight for United but, with a desire to avenge that last thrashing, Kompany knows there will be no easing up.

He said: "I don't expect Manchester United to be less motivated because they have this points gap between us where they are pretty safe. It will be like a one-off game, it will be like a cup final. There will be everything in it. For the neutrals we have enjoyed a couple of great derbies in the last couple of years. I can only wish the same with a happy ending for Manchester City."

Kompany set for Belgium duty

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany looks set to feature for Belgium despite the concerns of his club.

Kompany has not played since January due to a calf problem but has reported for duty ahead of the World Cup qualifying double-header against Macedonia.

Belgium assistant head coach Vital Borkelmans insists no decision has yet been made on whether the 26-year-old defender will play but has stressed his importance to the country.

"Vincent is now training with the physical coach," Borkelmans told Sky Sports News. "He also trained very hard at City.

"He is very important for the group and we are quite happy he is here. We will make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday whether he can play or not."

The news is likely to upset Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who appeared to anticipate Kompany sitting out the international fixtures in order to recover fully.

"We don't want to take a risk at this moment because we have one game and then it is the international break so it's best he is recovering," said Mancini before facing Everton last week.

"The calf is a dangerous injury. If you don't recover very well then you can have a problem for four, five or six weeks in a row."

But when pressed on whether there is a dispute with City, Borkelmans added: "We talk many times with the coach [at City] but Vincent is very important to us. He is the captain of the team."

Kompany and Aguero close to return

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is confident Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero will return against Newcastle on 30 March.

City captain Kompany has been out since January with a calf problem.

Striker Aguero, 24, has not played since sustaining a knee injury in the 2-0 win over Chelsea on 24 February.

"Vincent is not in our plans for [Everton] but I think he will be ready for the Newcastle game, like Sergio," Mancini said.

"It is difficult. Vinny is a really important player for us and now it is 45 days he has been out. It is a big problem.

"Sergio is in Argentina but he will come back on Sunday."

The City manager has also denied speculation linking him with a move to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

The Italian added: "It is cold here, I think St Petersburg is [colder]? It is absolutely not true."

Sergio Aguero has only managed nine Premier League goals this season after scoring 23 on the way to City winning the title in his first campaign in England.
